Why Position Fit Matters When Building Your XI
Learn how natural positions, compatible roles, formation slots, and team chemistry shape every all-time XI you draft in 38-0.
A formation is eleven jobs
Selecting 4-3-3, 3-5-2, or 4-2-3-1 does more than move circles around a pitch. Every formation defines eleven concrete slots: goalkeeper, defenders, midfield roles, wide roles, and forwards. The draft is therefore asking two questions at once. Is this player good, and is this player good for the job that remains open?
That second question is where many apparently strong teams lose efficiency. A central midfielder may be able to cover defensive midfield, but that does not make the two roles identical. A left midfielder may cover the wing, while a striker pushed wide may be an emergency option rather than a natural fit. The pitch preview shows the jobs; the position indicator shows how naturally a candidate can perform one of them.
The 100, 70, and 30 fit tiers
38-0 uses three position-fit tiers. A player's primary position or an explicitly listed alternate position is an exact fit, displayed as 100%. A role covered through the game's compatibility map is a compatible fit, displayed as 70%. An incompatible assignment is valued at 30% inside the engine, although the normal draft interface avoids offering positions that the player cannot reasonably fill.
These percentages are fit weights, not player ratings. A 90-rated forward shown at 70% has not become a 63-rated player, and the interface is not claiming an exact real-world performance score. The number communicates how strongly that assignment contributes to the position-fit part of team chemistry.
Position fit is not the whole chemistry score
The team chemistry bar combines more than the eleven fit weights. Natural assignments provide the foundation, while the current model also considers how many eras are mixed, how many legends are present, and whether groups of players share a club. Chemistry is then capped to a sensible range before it affects the attack, midfield, defence, and overall team numbers.
This is why moving one player can change the team by a different amount than expected from the position percentage alone. The 100% or 70% label explains one slot. The chemistry bar summarizes the relationships across the entire XI. Keeping those concepts separate makes it easier to understand whether a problem comes from one role or from the balance of the squad as a whole.
Reading the draft screen
Before a player is selected, the candidate card checks the formation slots that are still open. If an exact role remains, that player can enter at full position fit. If only a compatible role remains, the draft warns that the assignment will cost chemistry. If no usable slot remains, the card explains why the formation cannot take that player instead of silently ignoring the choice.
When a player can cover several open roles, choosing the card opens a position list. That is the moment to compare the fit percentages with the shape of the rest of the team. Filling a flexible player into the first available role can close a better route for a specialist who appears later, so the most obvious position is not always the best strategic choice.
Practical decisions under pressure
Drafts are intentionally imperfect. You do not know which club-season squad the wheel will produce next, and you rarely get eleven ideal choices in the ideal order. Position fit gives you a stable way to compare options when reputation and rating point in one direction but the formation points in another.
