How to Build a Balanced All-Time XI in 38-0

Great players do not automatically make a great XI

An all-time draft encourages instant recognition. A famous attacker appears, the rating is high, and selecting that player feels like obvious progress. Yet 38-0 is not a list-building exercise. The formation contains eleven ordered jobs, and the simulation reads the completed group through attack, midfield, defence, goalkeeper, overall, and chemistry. A collection can be impressive name by name while still leaving one unit thin or requiring avoidable compromises in the final slots.

Balance begins with separating player quality from squad usefulness at that moment. Overall ratings and gameplay attributes are editorial inputs for the game, not official historical verdicts. They help compare options, but they do not erase formation needs. An excellent candidate for a role you have already covered may improve one choice while making the whole XI harder to finish. A slightly lower-rated specialist can be the more valuable selection when that player protects an otherwise fragile part of the shape.

The goal is not to flatten every decision into equal numbers. Star quality matters inside the unit calculations, and strong individuals can raise the finished side. The challenge is to make that quality available to a coherent XI. Before every pick, ask what improves, what remains open, and which future options disappear. That habit produces a team rather than a gallery.

Separate specialists from flexible players

Start by identifying specialists: candidates whose primary and listed alternate positions solve a narrow job in your chosen formation. Goalkeeper is the clearest example, and centre-back has no generic route from unrelated positions. A formation with a CDM or CAM also creates a named responsibility that may be better served by someone recorded for it. Specialists reduce risk because they give you an exact answer to a vacancy that could become awkward later.

Flexible players serve a different purpose. Their explicit alternate positions may give exact fit in several slots, while the compatibility map can provide additional 70% routes between related roles. That range lets you postpone a commitment or react after an unhelpful spin. Flexibility is most valuable while several relevant jobs remain open; once you assign the player, think about whether you are using the broadest option on a role that a narrower candidate could have filled.

A practical draft has both types. Secure the hardest specialist roles without filling every slot too early, then keep at least one adaptable route through the busiest part of the selection. Do not confuse flexibility with universal coverage: the game uses a defined map, and the normal draft prevents a candidate with no usable open position from being selected. Check the positions the interface actually offers rather than relying on how a player might be described in a real match.

Balance attack, midfield, defence, and goalkeeper

Review the XI by units after each selection. Attack strength draws on the shooting, pace, and dribbling of players recorded in attacking roles. Midfield uses passing, dribbling, and physical ability for the midfield group. Defence uses defending, physical ability, and pace for defenders, while goalkeeper strength uses the selected goalkeeper’s overall rating. The overall team number combines those units with average player rating, and chemistry affects the displayed outfield and overall values.

This structure rewards more than collecting the eleven highest overall values you see. If repeated attacking picks leave the defender group dependent on late spins, the attractive ratings have created concentration rather than balance. If the goalkeeper job remains empty, an outfield surplus cannot substitute for it. Look for the weakest unresolved unit and decide whether the current candidate genuinely improves it, preserves a route to it, or merely adds another strength where the team is already secure.

Formation slots and recorded primary roles are related but not identical ideas in the engine. A flexible player may fit the assignment you choose, while their primary role still determines which unit includes their attributes. That is another reason to judge the completed group rather than assuming the pitch label transforms a player’s underlying profile. You do not need to calculate formulas during a draft; the live team values show the effect. Use them as comparison tools inside 38-0, not as claims about real players or another rating system.

Plan for the spins you have not seen yet

Every choice is made with incomplete information. The wheel supplies a club-season squad, but you do not know the future order of squads or which positions will be attractive within them. Planning therefore means managing options, not predicting names. Divide the remaining pitch into three groups: urgent roles with few routes, flexible roles with several current answers, and repeated roles where you can afford to wait. Recheck those groups after every selection because one placement can change all three.

Avoid building a plan that depends on a particular future club, season, or legend appearing. No candidate is owed to the draft. Instead, define acceptable profiles: an exact centre-back, a natural or alternate wide player, a central option who can preserve the defensive-midfield job. This keeps your decisions grounded in information the game exposes and prevents a missed dream pick from breaking the XI.

Passing on quality can also be correct. If a candidate would consume the last open role available to several already-secured profiles, leave room for a harder need. On the other hand, do not wait forever when a rare exact solution appears. Uncertainty makes optionality valuable, but an option has value only if you eventually convert it into a filled slot. The strongest draft plans alternate between preserving routes and closing them at the right time.

Know when a 70% fit is worth it

A compatible 70% assignment is a trade-off, not a failed pick. Exact fits contribute more to the position-fit portion of chemistry, but the finished team is influenced by more than one slot. Player attributes and ratings shape unit strength, while chemistry also responds to era diversity, legend status, and groups of at least three players from the same club. A compatible player can therefore be useful when the alternative is leaving a hard job exposed or rejecting a major improvement to a weak unit.

Use three checks before accepting the compromise. First, confirm that the assignment is genuinely offered by the live position list. Second, compare what happens to the remaining vacancies; a 70% choice is dangerous if it consumes the only player who could solve another specialist role. Third, inspect the team values after placement. The position label tells you the local cost, and the chemistry and unit numbers show how the group currently absorbs it.

Do not treat chemistry as a reason to manufacture connections at any price. A cluster from one club can help only within the model’s wider calculation, and mixing eras can work against chemistry, but neither fact makes a poor positional plan sound. Start from playable roles, then use group connections to distinguish otherwise credible options. Judge the finished team as a whole

Before starting the season, perform one final audit. Confirm that every formation slot is filled, identify any compatible rather than exact assignments, and scan attack, midfield, defence, goalkeeper, overall, and chemistry together. A single headline number cannot explain the XI. One side may have a powerful attack but a weaker defence; another may trade a little individual rating for cleaner coverage and stronger chemistry. The useful comparison is between the complete profiles you have actually built.

Then accept that a balanced team is not a guaranteed result. The season uses opponent strengths, home advantage, expected-goal rates, and random score sampling across 38 fixtures. Better construction can improve the inputs without dictating every match or producing an official prediction. Judge your draft first by whether its decisions were coherent, then use the simulated campaign as the game’s football what-if.

For the next run, change one principle rather than chasing the previous score. Protect specialists earlier, keep a flexible midfielder open longer, or try a formation with a different distribution of roles. Comparing those decision paths will teach you more than copying eleven names. A balanced all-time XI is not one universal lineup; it is a finished group in which quality, coverage, chemistry, and uncertainty have all been managed deliberately.
